We had a bluesky phase for Vanguard back in 2022 to develop the faction's shape language. We weren't given briefs from Design, as they were still busy cooking, and thus had complete freedom while exploring the shape language. I was tasked vaguely with "flying unit" but liked the idea of an early/mid-game scout/harass unit that could function similar to the Viking in SC2, with both ground and flying modes. The illustration was done first as a starting point, and the more in depth ideation phase came after. The concept artists borrowed from one another over a six week period to arrive at a cohesive visual identity for the faction.
The Buzz Lightyear influence here is obvious, and perhaps even a bit on the nose, haha. I've always loved his design, and I guess winning his action figure when I was nine years old left an impression! He still stands vigilant on my bookshelf.
